The Omni Shoreham Hotel Washington D.C. was the brainchild of local real estate developer Harry M. Bralove. He endeavored to construct a luxurious hotel, which would serve as the city’s “Grand Dame.” Respected architect Joseph Abel spearheaded the design, a brilliant combination of Renaissance Revival and Art Deco aesthetics. They broke ground in 1929, completing construction more than a year later. The $4 million project saw the installation of cutting-edge amenities such as fireproof walls, running ice water, and high-speed Westbrook elevators.
The leading stars of their day—Aretha Franklin, Eartha Kitt, Bob Hope,The Smothers Brothers—performed shows at The Omni Shoreham Hotel over the years. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were guests. The landmark hotel has appeared in movies, includingThe Pelican Brief and No Way Out.
Countless politicians and dignitaries have graced its halls. President Harry S. Truman regularly played poker in Room 406D. Senator John F. Kennedy could be seen sipping cocktails in the famous Blue Room while courting his future wife Jackie. The Omni Shoreham Hotel hosted every presidential inaugural ball from Franklin D. Roosevelt to George H.W. Bush to Barack Obama.
